In the swirling shapeless white mists that formed the Nothingness beyond the void three figures paced back and forth impatiently
“So.. Now what?” asked Adeliwen
Mycroft looked at Beowulf then back at Adeliwen and shrugged “I dunno.. I’m confused with all these coming and goings. I can’t keep up!”
“If I may interject..” said Beowulf “The Maker moves in mysterious ways.. it is not for us to second guess his motives”
“The Maker? We still calling him that? “Snorted Adeliwen derisively “I think Pete will suffice for now”
Mycroft shifted uneasily “I owe my very existence to the Mak..erm.. to Pete. After all he DID bring me into existence, as he did you you two as well!”
“That’s as maybe ” said Adeliwen “But look at what else he did! Beowulf did he not create you the realm of Sanctuary?”
“Yes.. he did and a great place it was too! Such sights! the tower of high arts”
“The rainbow brite tower you mean?” Giggled Mycroft
“Hey! the floors were colour co-ordinated that’s all ! ” Replied Beowulf
“Look you two , you’re missing the point. Beo, what happened to Sanctuary?” Asked Adeliwen
“Well..erm.. It got destroyed when I attempted to tap into the Ender energies” Blushed Beo
“But DID you? cast your mind back.. what REALLY Happened?” asked Adeliwen
“Now you mention it I do remember working in my lab on some alchemical research Then thousands of endermen swarmed into the city, overrunning everything and leaving chaos in their wake.” Beowulf mused for a second “You know.. that’s pretty much the last thing I remember before I was dragged back but as an evil dictator. I don’t know how that happened. I was never evil!”
“You see, that’s the problem exactly ” Stated Adeliwen “You were re-written as the Bad guy and Mycroft as the plucky hero. Mycroft created Overwatch and flew it to the ruins of Old Sanctuary”
“I remember, that was the first time I spoke to the Ma..erm.. dammit.. the first time I spoke to Pete” said Pete ” Then Beo and I were set against one another in a tale of revenge and dark magic”
“Yes, You and he were set against one another by a magic known only as ‘The Narrative’ ” Said Adeliwen “Then that world too was erased. At the height of a great battle too if I remember correctly?”
“Yes indeed ” Said Beowulf “Mycroft and I were about to wage war on each other when the very fabric of reality around us unravelled”
“Exactly and then you ended up in Verdantia with me ” Said Adeliwen “And we all know how well that ended!”
Beowulf rubbed his head “If I remember correctly one of you two knocked me out with a paperweight!”
Mycroft coughed apologetically “Erm.. sorry about that but you WERE getting a bit…well Edgy again”
Adeliwen Laughed “Don’t you guys see? it doesn’t matter what you do.. it’s Pete who decides our fate!”
Mycroft looked around the barren void and gestured with his hand “So he’s decided to leave us here in this shapeless void to contemplate our existence?”
“Mycroft dear friend, You miss the point!” smiled Adeliwen “the fact that we’re here at all means that Pete has SOMETHING planned for us”
“You mean a new land?” Asked Beowulf
“Possibly Beo” stated Adeliwen “perhaps a new land with new rules. who knows?”
“I feel a great disturbance in the Farce. As if dozens of players suddenly cried out in terror” intoned Mycroft.
Adeliwen and Beowulf looked at Mycroft and blinked disbelievingly
“What? We’re really going there?” Asked Beowulf
Mycroft grinned mischievously “oh you know, Just trying it on and seeing how it fits”
Beowulf laughed “Well I don’t care if you get the urge to walk around in your dressing gown and tell people ‘These aren’t the Golems you’re looking for’ as long as I don’t have to be an evil asthmatic overlord in a black mask!”
“hey Adeliwen would look GREAT in white with two Danish pastries stuck to the side of her head” Laughed Mycroft
“Don’t even go there!” giggled Adeliwen
All three burst into fits of the giggles.
high above their heads a faint crackle of static and a single lone drop of water fell and splashed on Adeliwen’s forehead
“hey! is it raining?” Adeliwen asked as she wiped her brow
“Raining? from where? there’s nothing here apart from us three” Said Mycroft as another drip of water landed on the end of his nose.
slowly the drips became more and more frequent and within mere moments it was a torrential downpour. Myroft, Adeliwen and Beowulf were soaked to their skin and looked deeply miserable at the lack of any shelter. Mycroft looked around then glanced down.. and without raising his head tapped Beowulf on the arm
“Erm.. guys ” he said worryingly “can the Nothing flood?”
“I don’t know, why do you ask? ” asked Adeliwen as she looked down at the water rising up above her ankles “ooh! I see!”
The water was rising faster and faster .. much faster than the rain would suggest.
“Ok.. I am now officially worried” Said Beowulf as he waded through waist deep water “Does Pete plan to drown us?”
“I shouldn’t think so ” Said Adeliwen “although his actions are not always apparent! Remember when he grew Verdantia around me? I suspect this is similar”
The water was now several feet deep and all three friends were forced to tread water as it rose around them
“I don’t *gulp* know how *blub* how long I can *bubble* *cough* keep this up!” choked Mycroft as he bobbed up and down in the rapidly deepening water
“I’m sure something will come up soon” said Adeliwen as she splashed around. “Perhaps he’s planning on creating an island for us like he did in Verdantia”
“Well whatever *gulp* he does he *choke* best do it soon” cried Beowulf who was finding his heavy robes and leather armour made staying buoyant problematic “I don’t think *glub* I can stay afloat for much Long.. *blub* ”
Beowulf’s head sunk under the water and didn’t resurface. Adeliwen and Mycroft looked at each other in shock and screamed in unison
and both of them dived into the water to recover their drowning friend.
Deeper and deeper they swam into the inky blackness. A faint shadow preceded them and Adeliwen assumed it could only be the unconscious form of Beowulf. She gestured to Mycroft and he nodded and they both swam deeper, their lungs beginning to burst.
Eventually they caught up with Beo and each of them took an arm, but by then they had no air in their lungs and blackness began to creep into the edge of their vision.
They struck out for the surface but with the unconscious form of Beowulf slung between them it was nigh on impossible and soon all three slumped into unconsciousness.
Darkness claimed them all.
They awoke later on a slightly damp cool grass surface and they opened their eyes and looked around.
“You two ok?” asked Adeliwen
“I think so ” Said Mycroft “Beo? you Ok?”
“I’m fine!” He said, patting himself “Hey I’m dry! where are we? on an island somewhere?”
Adeliwen looked around and then .. slowly … she looked up
“Erm.. no. This isn’t an island! erm guys I think you should look up”
As all three looked skywards their collective jaws dropped. Above their heads a vast crystal dome held back the oceans, white Crystalline stone vaulted supports reinforcing the clear domed shell. Around them lush green grass was separated by paths made of the same smooth white crystalline stone with glowing redstone lamps set into it at regular intervals. At the very height of the dome sunlight shone done where the dome breached the waves.
“Ok. I’m officially impressed” said Beowulf “But I do have ONE slight question”
“What’s that?” Asked Mycroft
“Well we’ve got plenty of air and all.. but I don’t see any doors” Beowulf stated
“I see that ” Said Adeliwen “What’s your point?”
“How do we get out?”
